Respiratory diseases are the third leading cause of death, yet first-line diagnostic tools are not reproducible or capable of giving an accurate diagnosis. This means that patients cannot be diagnosed effectively without the use of complex or irradiating technologies.

ALTUS is developing a Medical Device for the evaluation of Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) and respiratory diseases by imaging the lungs using ultrasonic waves. The major innovation is based on imaging algorithms that exploit the broadband deformation of acoustic waves. This makes it possible to carry out acoustic tomography - which is both accurate and comprehensive, covering the entire respiratory system.

  • Non-ionising acoustic waves, unlike the X-rays currently used.
  • Effective and inexpensive diagnostic aid with no risk of contamination for medical staff.
  • Monitoring of disease progression using autonomous, radiation-free imaging, which can be carried out in the hospital bed.
  • A system that is simple to implement and could be used for imaging in a doctors surgery.

State of progress

The aim is to carry out a clinical evaluation of the device in order to obtain CE marking.

Respiratory diseases (COPD, asthma).
