Context

Hamstring injuries are common among all athletes, particularly in sports that involve sprinting phases such as football, rugby, American football, and track and field. One of the main challenges with this type of injury is its high recurrence rate, which can reach up to 60% in some individuals.

A key reason behind this high risk of reinjury is the lack of objective criteria for return to sport. To date, no validated guidelines exist to help healthcare professionals make informed decisions about when an athlete can safely resume sports activities. Among the available assessments, the H-Test remains one of the most recommended tools in the scientific literature. However, it currently does not provide practitioners with objective measurements and only captures the athlete’s perceived apprehension — a purely subjective indicator.

Technology

The solution is based on the collection of objective data obtained through two-dimensional video analysis during the execution of the test. The H-Test View only requires the use of a standard smartphone (or tablet), allowing clinicians to easily and affordably gather reliable and valid data on the performance of the patient’s hamstring muscles.

This new tool is expected to improve athlete management and help reduce the risk of reinjury. Additionally, it could be used in the rehabilitation of patients who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, as this type of rehabilitation also requires precise assessment of hamstring performance.

Advantages

  • Precision and reliability for improved patient management
  • Time and efficiency gains for patient monitoring and return-to-play rehabilitation
  • Reduced risk of reinjury
  • Lower time and cost associated with sports injury management
  • Evidence-based and individualized decision-making to maximize return-to-play success

State of progress

To make the tool easily accessible to healthcare professionals and enable large-scale international dissemination, a smartphone/tablet application is currently under development. Ongoing clinical research aims to identify the most relevant parameters for practical use. This research will inform the content of the application and provide clinicians with the most appropriate indicators for their practice.

Applications

The H-Test View is intended for use in the fields of rehabilitation and sports medicine.
